A Note From Derek

I began writing lyrics when I was sixteen. Simple verse chorus stuff. One of the first songs I was kind of happy with (I’m my own worst critic) with was a song called “Lonely Times”.  A song of love and loss. It was to be a continued theme throughout my lyrics.

I was an introverted child and communication was non-existent for many years. I thought a lot. So revealing my inner self in writing became a natural way to express myself.  Combined with my love of piano, the two were to become the central part of my existence.

The only thing lacking was self-belief. I believed in my songs but not myself.

That’s the part that took me the longest…to believe in myself. In recent times I have come to realize that my songs are self-inclusive, meaning that I play a part in the lyrical stories I try to convey.
